On the eve of the 2008 Election, tens of millions of Americans are at risk of losing their jobs and homes, while subprime mortgages bring the biggest of banks to their knees. In this Senate Banking Committee, you and your fellow senators will be tasked with making the most effective legislation possible that will help your desperate and angry constituents, while still making sure you can ensure funding for your next election cycle. Time is of the essence, and it just may be against you.
From the Chair:
Welcome to MasonMUN VI! I’m Lex Jung, a senior here at William Mason High School, and it is my honor to welcome you to this Specialized Committee. Besides Model UN, some of my hobbies include language learning, primarily German and Korean, music, and calisthenics. Some other clubs I am involved in include German NHS, the Infrastructure Planning Club, and the Global Language Club. This is the very first time I’ve hosted a committee for Model UN, so I’m really excited to see all of your debates and resolutions. I know that for many of you, this is the very first time you’ve ever attended a Model UN conference, so don’t feel nervous, and just do your best. I know you’ve prepared so much for this, so just make yourself proud.
As an upcoming Economics major who was born in 2008, one thing that we as Gen Z cannot fully understand is the 2007-2008 Great Recession. Because of the recession, more than three million homes were foreclosed on, Barack Obama was relatively easily able to become the first black president of the United States, and the first major protests against modern banking and finance companies were formed, among many other effects. This committee fully immerses you in this time period and will allow you to truly get a feel for how impactful the recession was.
Although this committee is simluating the United States Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs (Also known as the Senate Banking Committee and formerly the Committee on Banking and Currency), which primarily works with banking, finance, economic regulation/price controls, trade and industry/financial aid, and housing and infrastructure, it will follow the procedures and protocol of a Model UN Specialized Assembly. It is expected that delegates remain faithful to the political positions of the senator they are representing, but collaboration and negotiations are always encouraged. Position papers are not required, but will be considered for awards if submitted. If you have any questions, please reach out to us.
